Questions answered
Solar, battery, heat pump & EV FAQs
The questions villa owners across Murcia, Costa Cálida, Mar Menor, Cartagena & Alicante South ask us most — answered plainly by our own engineers.
Solar panels in Murcia
How much solar do I need for a Spanish villa?+
Most villas in Murcia are well covered by a 3–6 kWp system. Homes with air conditioning, a pool pump and an electric car usually need 6–10 kWp. We size the system from twelve months of your actual consumption rather than a rule of thumb.
How much can I save on my electricity bill?+
A correctly sized villa system typically cuts bills by 50–70%. Adding a battery and shifting the pool pump and washing machine to daylight hours pushes that higher, and surplus export credits reduce the remaining bill further.
Do you handle the legalisation paperwork?+
Yes. We prepare the CIE and boletín, register the installation with Industria and apply for compensación de excedentes with your electricity supplier, plus any IBI reduction your town hall offers.
Will panels work in summer heat?+
Panels lose a little efficiency above 25°C, which is why we mount with an air gap and choose inverters rated for Murcia's summer temperatures. Even with heat losses, output here is among the highest in Europe.
Do I need permission from my community?+
For a private villa, no. On a townhouse or in a comunidad de propietarios, self-consumption installations only need a simple notification to the community, not unanimous approval.
Batteries and storage
Is a battery worth it in Spain?+
If you are out during the day and use most electricity in the evening, yes. A battery stores your midday surplus instead of exporting it at a low compensation rate, and typically lifts self-consumption from about 40% to 80%.
What size battery should I choose?+
Most villas fit 5–10 kWh. As a guide, size the battery to your evening and overnight consumption — the electricity you use after sunset — not to the size of the panel array.
Will the battery keep my house running in a power cut?+
Only if the system is installed with a backup or EPS output. We fit hybrid inverters that support this, so essential circuits — fridge, lights, router, alarm — stay live during a cut.
Where is the battery installed?+
Indoors is best in Murcia: a garage, utility room or trastero keeps the battery out of direct sun and within its ideal temperature range, which protects both performance and warranty.
How long do batteries last?+
Lithium (LFP) batteries are warrantied for around 10 years or 6,000 cycles and normally continue at reduced capacity well beyond that. They can be added later to any hybrid system we install.
Heat pumps
Do heat pumps make sense in a warm climate?+
They are ideal here. Mild Murcia winters mean an air-source heat pump runs at high efficiency all year, giving roughly 3–4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity — and the same unit cools in summer.
Can a heat pump replace my gas boiler or bottled gas?+
Yes. An air-to-water heat pump can supply hot water and underfloor or radiator heating, removing bombonas and gas deliveries entirely. Paired with solar, most of that heat comes from your own roof.
Can I run a heat pump from solar panels?+
Yes, and it is one of the best ways to use surplus generation. We set hot-water heating to run in the middle of the day so the tank charges on free solar rather than grid electricity.
How noisy is it?+
Modern inverter units run at roughly 45–50 dB at one metre, similar to a fridge. We site them away from bedrooms and neighbouring terraces on anti-vibration mounts.
Pool heaters
How long can I swim with a pool heat pump?+
In Murcia a pool heat pump comfortably extends the season from roughly April to November, and with a cover it can keep a pool usable most of the year.
How much does it cost to run?+
A pool inverter heat pump delivers around 5 kW of heat per 1 kW of electricity. Running it during daylight from your solar array makes the heating effectively free on most days.
Do I need a pool cover?+
It makes a big difference. Most heat loss is evaporation from the surface overnight, so a cover typically halves running costs and holds temperature far better.
How long does it take to heat the pool?+
From cold, a typical villa pool takes two to three days to reach 28°C. After that the heater only tops up the temperature each day, which uses much less energy.
EV chargers
Which charger do I need at a villa?+
A 7.4 kW single-phase charger suits most homes and fully charges overnight. If your villa has a three-phase supply, a 22 kW charger cuts that time to a couple of hours.
Can I charge my car from solar only?+
Yes. With solar-surplus mode the charger tracks what your panels are exporting and only uses that surplus, so the car charges on free daytime electricity instead of drawing from the grid.
Will a charger trip my supply?+
No. Chargers we install include dynamic load management, which reduces charging power automatically when the house draws more, so your ICP never trips.
Is a certified installation required in Spain?+
Yes. EV charging points must be installed under ITC-BT-52 with the correct protection and a boletín. We issue the certificate as part of every installation.
